Use a simple informal observation process to identify one priority skill, choose a supporting skill, and follow a focused 10-day home-practice routine that builds confidence one clear step at a time.
No vague advice. The snapshot uses four response marks (Independent, Helped, Not Yet, Skipped) to isolate where to start today.
Your child does not need random extra work. They need one clear starting point, targeted practice, and an adult who can notice what happens next.
Over 22 years teaching K–5 Reading/Gifted/English as a Second Language, I watched students struggle with foundational skills that should have made reading easier: blending sounds, reading unfamiliar words, working with blends and digraphs, spelling known patterns, and turning a spoken idea into a simple sentence. I saw how easily children fell further behind when adults did not know the order of skills to teach or the specific reading pattern that needed attention first.
I tried using technology alone, but I learned that a screen cannot accurately identify every struggle area without a caring adult observing a child’s responses. Through years of trial and error, I developed a faster approach: observe a few meaningful responses, choose one priority skill and one supporting skill, then teach and practice in a focused sequence. In one 20-day summer-school class of 15 below-level third-grade students, I reported four reading-level gains for the class. That was one teacher-led classroom experience, not a promise or forecast for every child.
“Parents do not need to become reading teachers. They need a clear way to notice the next skill and practice it with confidence.”
ReadGrowKids supports practical reading routines while helping children build confidence, resilience, and a more positive relationship with learning.
“What makes ReadGrowKids different is that it doesn't just focus on whether my child can read the words. It considers how my child feels, behaves, responds to challenges, and builds confidence while learning.”
“This feels like having an experienced reading teacher show me what to do, but in a way that I can actually do at home.”
“I love that ReadGrowKids was created by an experienced educator but doesn't require me to be a reading expert. It gives me a clear path to follow.”
“My child improved 3 reading levels in just a few months.”
“I can’t believe most teachers don’t use these basic strategies.”
“I actually like reading now!”
“My son now looks forward to reading time and I even caught him reading after his bedtime with a flashlight.”
Yes. You do not need to become a reading teacher. The guide walks you through what to observe, how to record it, and how to practice one small skill at a time. It also tells you when an unclear result means you should pause and consult your child's teacher.
I created this as a focused digital starting point, not as one-to-one tutoring, a formal evaluation, or ongoing coaching. Families receive a practical teacher-built process they can use immediately, while I keep the first step lower than private support. My larger mission is to help more children access the reading, phonics, writing, and spelling foundations that support future school, career, and college opportunities.
The plan gives you 10 days of focused practice. It does not promise that your child will catch up, change grade levels, or solve every reading challenge in 10 days. Your goal is to practice one targeted skill, observe your child's accuracy and level of help, then use the mini-check to decide what comes next.
In one focused session, you can move from “I do not know what to practice” to a teacher-built plan for the next 10 days.
